Choosing the perfect location for your photoshoot is crucial as it sets the tone and feel of your photos. Whether you’re planning a session with your significant other or your family, the right location can make all the difference. While lighting is also key (a topic for another day), the setting you choose will dramatically impact the outcome of your photos.
When choosing your location, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind:
Are you into nature or more urban settings like cityscapes? Identifying your preferred aesthetic is the first step. Nature lovers might lean towards parks, lakes, and gardens, while those who appreciate an urban feel might prefer downtown areas, historic districts, or modern architectural spots.
If you love vibrant colors, choosing a location with plenty of natural hues (trees, flowers, murals, etc.) will be ideal. For a more subdued, elegant look, locations with neutral tones, such as a parking garage or industrial area, might be better suited. A downtown Dallas location like a parking garage might be perfect for a more muted, sophisticated look.
What are you going to wear? Your outfit will have a huge impact! I would not recommend wearing bright colors (ever, really), but especially when you are taking photos somewhere there is a lot of color already. Conversely, a brighter outfit would look good in the city or against a neutral backdrop, adding a pop of color and making you stand out.
Consider how easy it is to get to the location. Is there ample parking? Will you need to walk a long distance to reach the perfect spot? Ensure that the location is convenient for you, your photographer, and anyone else involved in the shoot.
The time of day can drastically change the look of your photos. Early morning or late afternoon (golden hour) typically provides the best natural light. Make sure your chosen location is suitable for the time of day you plan to shoot.

Some locations may require permits or have restrictions on photography. Check in advance to avoid any surprises on the day of your shoot.
